I give Carlos credit for saying, “Well, what if we tried it this other way?”ĪRTnews: Scott, you mentioned “Dancing Around the Bride.” What was most distinctive about that show for you? I was thinking an exhibition would make sense for both our institutions-but how would it work, because we’re not going to get loans for long enough, or the museums are too close to make sense for it to tour from one to the other. It wasn’t instantly something I could appreciate or understand because it was so unusual. Rothkopf: We spoke about wanting to do something together, and it was slightly later that you mentioned your idea that the show could happen simultaneously. I told Scott he’d written beautifully on Jasper’s work, and said, “Wouldn’t it be great to think of a show together?” It really started from us, as curators. The beauty of this project is that it didn’t begin as part of a big institutional machine but just the two of us speaking together and saying we both love Jasper and his work. Courtesy Philadelphia Museum of ArtĪRTnews: Do you remember the first conversation you had about collaborating on an exhibition, going back to the beginning?īasualdo: I totally do. “Dancing Around the Bride,” the 2012 show curated by Carlos Basualdo featured performances of works by choreographer Merce Cunningham. I was very happy to work with someone who curated something I respected so much. Rothkopf: Carlos and I didn’t know each other that well prior to this project-besides the little bit from when we met-but I have a profound memory of his show “Dancing Around the Bride: Cage, Cunningham, Johns, Rauschenberg, and Duchamp.” I made pilgrimages to Philadelphia for it, and it remains one of the most amazing exhibitions I have ever seen. He was a student of Yve-Alain Bois, and I was using the fine arts library to prepare my course on the history of exhibitions in Venice. It kind of went from there.ĪRTnews: How did the two of you first meet?īasualdo: My wife was doing a post-doctorate at Harvard and introduced me to Scott. I sensed that museums were places where I might want to work in the future, and by the time I arrived at college and started to study art history, a light bulb went off over my head-like, Oh, there’s this job of being a curator, and they are the ones who do neat things at museums. I dragged my family to museums in any town we ever landed in, but I didn’t have an idea that there was a profession called “curator” that was responsible for selecting and displaying artworks. I didn’t have access to them in collectors’ homes or commercial galleries. I grew up adoring, from the age of seven or eight, being around works of visual art. Scott Rothkopf: My answer is a bit cornier. For me, from the very beginning, exhibitions were a way to think about creating a sort of extension of what I was trying to do with my work as a poet. I was interested in what an exhibition could do as a medium for combining ideas, different from though related to poetry. I was part of a group of people, with musicians and visual artists, and there were vivid conversations at the time across multiple disciplines. Whitney Museum of American Art/©2021 Jasper Johns/Licensed by VAGA at Artists Rights Society (ARS), New YorkĪRTnews: What is your first memory of recognizing the act of curation in a way that put you on your career path?Ĭarlos Basualdo: When I was in Argentina, I was mostly writing poetry. Jasper Johns’s Racing Thoughts, from 1983, is in the collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art. We like it there, it's good looking, and they have a really friendly sound staff." Jason Holstrom of Wonderful - and its popular side project, United State of Electronica - says that band did its CD-release show at Chop Suey "mainly because they were the ones who called us up and wanted to build a bill around a Wonderful show. "Then, when Frank came over, I got a show right away." "I never was able to get a show here," said Dolour's Shane Tutmarc, after a recent performance at Chop Suey. Severin's solid reputation for booking national DJ's and electronic acts combined with Nieto's grasp of the local scene made a strong duo. Nieto's presence gave the new Chop Suey instant credibility. He said, 'Yeah, me.' "Īnd so, pretty much just like that, the humble and well-liked Nieto left what many would feel to be a dream job, booking local bands into Seattle's best rock club, for the challenge of joining a new team. "I asked him if he knew anyone good who would want to be our G.M. Then, Quentin Ertel, the club's general manager, jumped ship to join Derschang and company.Ī dazed Severin was walking down Pike Street when he crossed paths with Frank Nieto, one of the Crocodile Cafe booking agents. The original Chop Suey owners sold the club to Chris Dasef, the proprietor of Pioneer Square's Temple Billiards who had, in terms of true nightclub experience. Would he become known as a serial club killer? "The reason I came here was to work with Linda, so I was pretty bummed," recalls Steven Severin, the Chop Suey booker he had previously worked at RKCNDY, which closed while he was there, and I-Spy, which closed shortly after he jumped ship to Chop Suey. Linda Derschang and her two partners who launched the club - converting the punk/indie rock house Breakroom into an attractive, multi-use club just a year before - abruptly sold the Capitol Hill club, off to open a new place (the Battery Bar, soon to be open in Belltown). indeed, it looked like Chop Suey might be destined to become a Chinese restaurant. Yet earlier this year, the club was in mass confusion. If you're into diverse music and diverse crowds, this is the place. It had to happen sooner or later, as the Chop has been drawing huge crowds for bookings ranging from touring acts - like DJ Spooky, the experimental jazz/hip-hop fusionist who flashes his intelligent skills on Saturday - to top-notch local bands. This spring, Chop Suey was given the official "hot-spot" stamp when Sifellah Bachir started selling dogs and sausages outside the Capitol Hill club. They can sniff the sweet smell of success, these vendors, and top it with onions. How do you know when a club has arrived? The greatest single sign - more legit than a radio station's crowing, far more sincere than the glam-crowd's studied posing, better even than limos lined up in front - that a Seattle nightspot is the real deal: A hot-dog vendor sets up shop outside. So often the people in novels are at the mercy of the story - mere puppets of clever plot twists or of writers who want to showcase their ability to wring every possible bit of suspense from a situation. Lester Burdon is also in prison. It is rare in contemporary literature to read a book in which the characters are naturally allowed to make the decisions that propel the plot forward. Kathy wakes up in the hospital unable to speak and is later transferred to a prison. He then smothers his sleeping wife, and ends his own life. The Colonel is enraged, and strangles Kathy. When the Colonel returns home, Kathy is there. Kathy finds the Colonel and his wife and tries to resuscitate the Colonel, but it is too late. He poisons his wife by serving her tea with an overdose of her pain medication. The movie depicts the Colonel arriving at home after witnessing the death of his son. Second, the movie depicts the ending differently. The novel suggest these experiences in his youth led to some of the bad decisions made, first threatening the Colonel, and then kidnapping the Colonel and his family in order to force the Colonel into giving the house back to Kathy. Lester also endured bullying as a child, and young man. The movie mentions the abandonment, but provides no background. Lester’s father abandoned Lester and his family when Lester was a teenager. First, the book gives the reader more detail into Lester Burdon’s life. Two main differences exist between the movie and the novel. Shohreh Aghdashloo: Nadireh 'Nadi' Behrani.Jennifer Connelly: Kathy Lazarro Niccolo. The message of the film, according to most reviewers, seems to be that this is a proud man, broken by the cultural impasse that makes it as impossible for him to give up the house as it is for Kathy to let him have it. He then covers his own head with a plastic bag, tightly wraps packaging tape around the neck, lies down on the bed next to her, and, in one of the most grisly suicide scenes I’ve ever witnessed on TV or film, takes his own life as we watch the bag cloud with the moisture of his own breathing, and finally conform tightly to the contours of his dead face. In a final downward spiral of their lives, Massoud laces some tea with sleeping medication and feeds it to his wife Nadi. His father returns home, distraught and unable to tell his wife. On the steps of the courthouse, however, Colonel Massoud's teenage son Esmail grabs Lester’s gun, and, in a tragic confrontation, is shot dead by security officers. By the end of the film, he completely loses his moral compass, locks the Behranis in their bathroom overnight, and extracts a promise from Massoud that he will sign the house back over to the county, and ultimately return it to Kathy. One night, he goes to the Behrani home, breathing vague threats of investigations and probably deportation. As his sense of sexual moralityīecomes blurred, Lester’s sense of legal boundaries wavers, too. He has a wife and two kids, but cynically falls for this desperate single young woman. Into this volatile mix comes Lester Burdon, the deputy sheriff assigned to help Nicolo get moved out. Was her father’s dying legacy to her and her brother. Nicolo, on the other hand, has to get the house back: it Getting the house back through the courts may take months, and now Massoud Behrani wants not his original payment, but four times that amount: the current appraised value. The sale may be llegal on one level, but Kathy’s negligence has left her in a precarious position. She also doesn’t open her mail for weeks at a time, and so she misses the numerous warnings sent out by the county. The problem is, Nicolo is broke, doesn’t run a business, and has no taxes to pay. Having fled Iran, and now trying to pull their shattered lives back together, the father, Colonel Massoud Amir Behrani ( Ben Kingsley), buys a beachside bungalow in San Francisco that is being auctioned by the county because its owner, Kathy Nicolo ( Jennifer Connelly), cannot pay business taxes on it. It has been suggested by some that Joplin may have witnessed this event (unconfirmed). Crush was fired that evening as a result of the calamity, but quietly rehired the following day. The photographer, Joe Deane lost an eye from a flying bolt. In spite of precautions that were taken, including Crush interviewing many mechanics about possibility of boiler explosions, both boilers exploded and three spectators were killed while many more were injured from the debris. The 90 mph collision (each train was traveling at least 45 mph), of which the point of impact is shown in the accompanying photograph, was spectacular as promised. Then each backed up a mile or so, and the crew jumped out after setting the trains at full throttle. The trains, painted red and green and towing cars filled with railroad ties, touched noses. It took hired law enforcement several hours to push the onlookers back far enough from the planned point of collision. There were about 40,000 spectators who came by Katy excursion trains for a nice picnic lunch. After months of hype on posters spread throughout northern Texas, the event came to pass on September 15, 1896. He convinced the line to stage a collision with him as the promoter. In 1896, William George Crush, an agent of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas line (the Katy), noted how many spectators showed up at train wrecks. Try that one on in this age of personal accountability! The lyrical content reflects male attitudes of the time, with a man begging his intended love to take him back because the tryst he engaged in was the other girl's fault. There is little extraordinary about the song, which reflects the current style of maudlin ballads that were a part of the "gay nineties," but it shows that Joplin was already an accomplished musical talent. Mantell, who purchased the song, was a jeweler by trade, but many different merchants dabbled in publishing in this time when vanity publications were becoming good business. At some point the group likely had an extended stay in Syracuse, New York, where this and one other Joplin piece were first published. Having been well represented by a credible booking agency, they traveled throughout the Midwest and Eastern United States. During this period Joplin had been traveling with his Texas Medley Quartette, actually an octet, in which Scott played piano, conducted and acted as a soloist, and his brothers Robert Joplin and Will Joplin sang baritone and tenor respectively. This song was a worthy first effort, and the first known Scott Joplin piece published.
